The ALU Archives – OPI Skinny Dip’n In Lake Michg’n

ALU Archives, All Lacquered UpThe ALU Archives focuses on older, beloved shades from the All Lacquered Up stash.

Nude polishes were all over the runways for Spring, making opaque flesh toned lacquers one of the big trends of the season. Of course that didn’t make me jump for joy but in an attempt to adapt, I’ve been testing out different nudes to see if I can hop on that bandwagon.

In my research I came across a loved but forgotten shade, OPI Skinny Dip’n In Lake Michg’n. Originally released in the uber-popular Chicago collection along with vampy staple Lincoln Park After Dark, Skinny Dip’n has joined LPAD in becoming OPI Classics perm shades.

The MUA nail board girls would call Skinny Dip’n a BABB (Band Aid But Better). BABB came from the idea that opaque nude polish looks like flesh-toned band aids, only better. Skinny Dip’n’s neutral beige hue definitely lands it in that category.

What really makes this one a winner for me is the sparkle. Peppered with smooth, silver micro-shimmer, Skinny Dip’n isn’t your everyday boring nude. It’s office appropriate with a kicky spirit! My bottle is of the old OPI formula so I can’t speak for the new version but mine applies semi-sheer needing three coats to achieve opacity.

Who else loves Skinny Dip’n? Do you have a favorite opaque nude? I’d love to hear your recommendations.

i have this in my stash somewhere, i haven’t used it for ages. I’m gonna dig it out and give it a go!

Thanks for reminding me of this colour!

How about OPI Nomad’s Dream (well, not exactly nude but close) and Cosmo-not Tonight?

  3. Anonymous says:

I was just wondering if you ever announced the winner for the Fanatic Favorites 2008 survey?

    Thanks

I am, surprisingly, really digging that shade.

I’m kind of bothered by the whole “nude” terminology, though – not specifically from you but in general. Like, that’s a gorgeous shade but it’s not actually anywhere near my flesh-tone and it’s even further away from the skin tone of most people who aren’t white. It seems like “nude” is one of those words that really shows how deep down in our culture racism really is.

Which is a heavy topic for a nail polish blog, sorry. Like I said, the color is superb and the glitter, you are so right, really makes it.

i dont’ know why i’m digging nude shades lately–wearing Tickle my France-y right now!

i may have to go digging through the OPI perm collection for this one

The Rotund is right!!!! Way to go!

Alison – You’re welcome! I just love finding forgotten goodies to share.

Mooeysullivan – Thanks for the suggestions. Though I tend to think of Cosmo as more of a frost/metallic

The Rotund – I get where you’re coming from and nude is a pretty inaccurate term considering all the shades of people in this world.

Jennifer – Tickle My France-y seems to be one of those shades that will probably become a classic as well. It’s very flattering

I have to say I’m not a fan of nudes… I bought Tickle My France-y but I rarely wear it. I’m super pale so maybe they just doesn’t work with my skin tone? I’m also mostly a fan of darks, but if I’m going light I do love “Bare to Be Different” from Sephora by OPI – it’s also a great french manicure base. Any advice for us pale ladies on a good nude for our skin tone?

This tone just doesnt work for my skin-tone. But my favourite go-to shades for nude colours are:
    1) OPI Got A Date To-Knight (for a pinkish one)
    2) OPI Mi-So Happy With This Colour (for a more beige-ish one although I know this leans a little bit towards the more white side)

But I love them cos they are light and opaque!

I can’t decide if I like this color – I really think you have to have the right skin tone to pull it off.

this is one of my top colors, i love it!

I need to wear something slightly pink-based in my nude tones; anything yellow based gives me the appearance of smokers hands :S

I usually go for OPI Malaysian Mist if I want a beige cream, but I also really love Kit Quick Step if I want a nude that’s more on the pink side.

I cannot believe you posted about this one! I just bought it yesterday. Fell in love w/ the shimmer… I was looking at the new Sand in Your Suit (from the new South Beach collex) and decided I liked this one better!!! Next to RBL Plie, it’s my new fave skin-tone BBB polish! :)

  14. Steffie says:

I’m not a fan of nudes on my fingers. For me, the BBB look just doesn’t work. I like bold polish colors, and if I decide to do something on the neutral side, I tend to go for either Essie Ballet Slippers or just a stark bright white.

  15. K says:

At the moment I’m digging Essie Mambo since I just got it in a swap. Perfect slightly shimmery nude.

Right now I’m wearing Putty In My Hands by FingerPaints. I don’t think it’s my shade, but I just love it so much.

    Sally Hanson Salon – “Divinity.”
Sadly, earlier this week I dropped my bottle on the ceramic tile floor of my bathroom.

There’s a color by Rescue Beauty called “Opaque Nude” that’s…. the perfect opaque creme nude. Normally nudes are way too sheer for my taste, even if they’re supposed to be opaque.

Oh please, I am white and have yet to see a “nude” match my skintone.

I know Anonymous, I have yet to find one that matches mine either.
