Constellation Nails and Tutorial Inspired by Nail’d It!
Have you guys been watching Nail’d It on Oxygen? I loved the piano key nails and bejeweled crescent that China created for her music industry client last week. It has officially earned a place on my DVR’s season pass list and I’m looking forward to tonight’s episode because it challenges the nail artists to create astrological nail art for psychics.
I’m a pretty pragmatic person but there’s something about astrology that intrigues me. I’ve had my natal chart read and studied astrology a bit. Maybe it was all those trips to my school’s planetarium as a kid. I just love staring at the night sky and wondering how forces outside our tiny planet affect my daily life.
Inspired by this week’s Nail’d It Quick Dry Challenge, I created my own take on astrological nail art with these Constellation Nails. Check out my nail art tutorial below.
The Inspiration
Nail’d It airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Oxygen and I have a sneak peek at one of looks created by tonight’s competitors. Asked to incorporate the client’s star sign into their design, this person is obviously a Pisces.
Products Used
For my look, I decided to keep it simple with graphic black and white so the constellation designs would be the star of the show.
I selected OPI Who Are You Calling Bossy?!? ($7, Amazon.com) for the background and JINsoon Polka White ($18, Nordstrom.com, Sephora.com) to add depth. The tiny white glitter gives the look of smaller stars in the distance.
To complete the look, I used the Nubar Nail Art Pen ($5.50, Amazon.com) in White along with a dotting tool dipped in Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On (not pictured) and Nails Inc Kensington Caviar Top Coat ($15, Sephora.com). ps The Nubar Nail Art Pens are my fave because the striper is SO thin and easy to hold/control.
Get The Look
- Begin with two coats of OPI Who Are You Calling Bossy?!?
- Add one coat of JINsoon Polka White. Avoid depositing too many of the large hex glitter
- Dip your dotting tool in Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On and lay out your star pattern.
- Use the Nubar Nail Art Pen striper to connect the dots
- Add a fast drying top coat. I love the Nails Inc because it’s thin and doesn’t ruin nail art!
Constellation Nails
I opted to create more well known constellation patterns starting with Orion on the index finger, the Big Dipper on the middle finger, Cassiopeia on the ring finger and Gemini (my star sign) on the pinkie finger.
Am I the only one who is thinking of that scene in Serendipity where John Cusak’s character finds Cassiopeia in the freckles on Kate Beckinsale’s character’s arm?
On my thumb, I drew Bootes, the kite-shaped constellation.
Nail’d It airs tonight at 9/8c, only on Oxygen. Interact with the show on social media by following @Oxygen on Twitter and Instagram and by visiting the Nail’d It Facebook page.
Will you be watching? Would you give this nail art look a try? What has been your favorite Nail’d It challenge so far?

Pretty and fun constellation nails these are!
This is amazing. I love it. And you too.
Aww, thanks doll! Miss your face
I have never seen Nail’d It, but I really like your design. It manages to be both fun yet sophisticated.
Thank you! You should definitely check out the show. It’s fun!
These are amazing! I love how simple they are to do, yet still look so complicated and pretty! well done!
Thanks Steph! I can’t do complicated nail art so I like designs that look harder than they are. I don’t have 3 hours to hand paint my nails, though I love looking at the work of people who do have that kind of patience and talent.
Love this tutorial!
I’m a fan of the show and psychics, so I definitely wanna watch!
Fantastic!
Those are freaking awesome. And any time I hear or read Cassiopeia, I think of Serendipity lol
Yes, I’m not alone. I love that movie. And it always makes me want a frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity.
I caught part of the episode this morning before work, and I think I like your design better than the ones I saw on the show! They did have to work with magnetic polish, which I have never had much luck with. Can’t wait to finish the episode and see how the bouquet nails turned out
You’re so sweet, thank you! I like more simplistic nail art than what you see on the show but that’s not really what the competition is about. Working with magnetic polish certainly added a challenge as getting a strong pattern isn’t easy. I enjoy watching what they come up with even though it’s not something I would wear.
THIS LOOKS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Aww, thanks Kel!
Love it – the black and white keeps it looking really fresh and modern!
I’m loving black & white right now. It’s so clean and chic.
I honestly think astrology is a bunch of bunk, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate gorgeously created nails! Thanks for the quick & easy tutorial!
Ha, you are welcome to think so. I totally understand but thank for the compliment on my nail design.
These nails are totally awesome! I usually stay away from free hands designs because I don’t have the steadiest hands, but I might even give these a try! I like your design of these even better than the sneak peak from the show, great job!
Aww, thanks Jessica. I don’t do much freehand because my hands aren’t steady either. I can handle straight lines which is why this look works for me. Give it a go and shoot me a pic
This manicure is so awesome! It couldn’t be any cuter!
Thank you Tricia. I love that it’s easier than it looks.
I <3 THIS NAIL DESIGN:)
Thank you!
I love this! I do not have a steady enough hand for nail art so I live vicariously through you!
Oh Melissa, I don’t have a steady hand either. You should see how mine shakes. You should definitely give it a try.
