The Best Glitter Top Coats for Holiday 2014
When it comes to holiday manicures, there is no easier way to transition your nails from day to night than adding a glittery top coat. Nail art is fun, if you have the time, but considering how crazy this season is, time is never on our side.
Take this past Saturday, for instance. I had the best intentions of creating a fun look for my friend’s wedding. The reality… I was shopping all day and by the time I got home, the best I could do was throw a gold glitter over my navy mani. Done and done!
With all the unique combinations of glitter colors and sizes being thrown our way, the options for sprucing up your nail look are limitless. Today, I have my Top 10 Glitter Top Coats to take your mani from “fine” to “fab.”
Top 10 11 Glitter Top Coats
Okay, so I couldn’t exactly get my list down to 10, sue me! There were just so many great glitters released for fall and holiday that narrowing them down was a challenge. And, like you’re going to complain about seeing more glitters, right? Let’s get started!
China Glaze Dancing & Prancing ($7.40, Amazon.com) What I love about this multi-colored glitter is that the shades are more muted, not super bright. So you can get that confetti look without it being too in-your-face.
China Glaze Pine-ing For Glitter ($7.40, Amazon.com) As I said in my China Glaze Twinkle review, this color isn’t the best worn alone, but the multi-sized glitter pieces will look fab layered. Can you imagine this in a jelly sandwich??
Essie Summit of Style ($8.50, Nordstrom.com) is a bronze glitter that I love because it isn’t too brown. And over a champagne metallic, stunning!
FingerPaints Sugar & Spice ($5.49, Sally Beauty) is a fine red glitter with a slightly tinted base. Over white, as shown, it looks like candy.
Maybelline Amethyst Aura ($2.99, Drugstores) is an indigo, mixed size glitter. Okay, so a few years ago I bought a glitter like this from ULTA and I WORE IT OUT! But, because I found it in the ULTA clearance bin, I never shared it because I knew you wouldn’t be able to get it. Amethyst Aura is its twin and I’m so so in love. I mean, how chic does it look over grey?
Maybelline Rose Mirage ($2.99, Drugstores) is the perfect rose gold glitter. Rose gold was made for the holiday season. It suits most skin tones and feels rich and cozy. I love it over a pinky neutral like OPI My Very First Knockwurst (below).
Morgan Taylor Snow Place Like Home ($8.50, LoxaBeauty.com) is the ideal icicle topper that you can throw over any shade to give it a wintry feel.
Nails Inc Alexa Lace ($15, Sephora.com) is eye-catching with its sexy matte look. I like its sweetness over white but over black, watch out!
Nails Inc Alexa Sequin ($15, Sephora.com) is a mix of gold and black glitters that looks like New Year’s Eve in a bottle. I need a dress that looks like this to go with it.
OPI My Voice Is A Little Norse ($6.49, Amazon.com) is filled with so much holo goodness, your friends will wonder if you’re a magpie every time the light hits its glitter.
Sally Hansen Goldi-Flecks ($5.99, Drugstore.com) and its mix of gold and white glitters feels really expensive and unique, especially given its price point. There’s something about white and gold blended together that draws me in. It’s like bokeh for your nails.
What is the best glitter top coat you have for the holidays? Do you have, or plan to get, any of my picks?

Oh! I need that China Glaze right now!! Wearing Opi’s Snow Globettroter on top of A England’s Fotheringhay Castle today. I bought all the glitters from de Gwen Stefani collection this year and I’m playing with it. I own Amethyst Aura and never thought of putting it on top of grey! Thanks!
Oh, that combo sounds beautiful and I love blue glitter over grey. One of my fave looks.
I still cannot get over OPI My Voice is a Little Norse <3. And I so agree with the China Glaze toppers. Fantastic choices!
Thanks Cris! Yes, that OPI glitter was a real winner for them this year.
That Morgan Taylor top coat is gorgeous!
Right? It’s so icy, I love it
I couldn’t wait to see what you picked, because I knew they’d be gorgeous! I think the China Glaze (top) is my favorite, followed by Essie.
I knew you’d like those
I knew you’d have fabulous ones. I don’t do much glitter so I had more shimmer in my post. I the Nails Inc and Morgan Taylor a lot.
I don’t wear a ton of glitter just because of the removal but I love the look of them. And if I’m wearing them for a short time, I use a glue base so they slide off easily.
Safe to say, yes, I like all of these!
These are all lovely and festive. Great picks.
Thanks Lisa!
Love Morgan Taylor Snow Place Like Home! Nails Inc Alexa Sequin is very much like Goggles from ButterLONDON which I love!
I don’t have that bL but they do look similar
Oh, I KNEW you’d have some brilliant ones! I can’t even pick a favorite.
Thanks Meredith!
Alexa Lace looks great over green too – layer it sparingly over a deep hunter or forest green and it looks like bloodstone!
Heya lady, do you remember by chance how many coats you used for the pic of Dancing & Prancing? Plus yes, I really like that combo of Amethyst Aura over gray… I don’t know that I’d have thought to do that color combo, and now I want to go home and see what purple glitters I have to do that!
Hey Amanda! I do. I used one-ish coats. I used my dab, dip, glide technique so I dipped the brush twice but spread it across the nail once.
Sweet, thanks!
Just put Amethyst Aura over Nails Inc Baker St. Love it!
I bet that is gorgeous. I LOVE Baker St
I must find that Sally Hansen! It really does look like a bokeh!
