GREEN Polish Hits The Chanel Runway
What do you think kids? I’ll wear a color no matter the season but how do you feel about a springy green for Fall? Yay or nay? images: Vogue UK
Chanel Spring 2009 – Vendetta & Django
When I heard that Chanel was finally coming out with a purple polish, I was beyond thrilled. It’s like Peter Philips had read my mind. A vampy aubergine would be the perfect complement to Chanel’s wildly popular Satin colors (Blue, Black, Pink, White) and now it’s finally here. Of the two polishes in Chanel’s Bohemian Fantasy collection, Vendetta is the color everyone is buzzing about.
Releasing such a deep shade for spring used to seem so odd but for the past few years some very popular darks have come from spring collections. Blue Satin is a good example as is OPI Yoga-ta Get This Blue & Black Cherry Chutney. It’s blurring the lines and making it acceptable to wear vampies year round. Most of us fanatics do that anyway but it’s becoming more mainstream. |
Of course, that doesn’t mean that Django is the red-headed step child (no offense to you lovely red-heads). It’s actually quite a refreshing color. As I look outside to see nothing but gray and snow, Django’s shimmery peach color totally brightened my day. It’s not something I would have expected to like but it has an airy feel that is so cheerful. And what I LOVE is that for such a light shade, it is opaque and streak free with just two coats.
Vendetta is exactly what I expected. An eggplant version of Blue Satin. The tonal shimmer is the same as the Satins in that it adds depth and only appears in bright light. The base color is definitely purple, not black, so one evenly applied coat will get you a much brighter look. Like Blue Satin, Vendetta is an “almost black” shade and I was hoping it would be lighter. It’s rich and velvety but more purple in the bottle than on the nail.
I looked for some comparison shades to help you replicate the look at home. What I found is that Vendetta falls between Essie Sexy Divide and China Glaze Midnight Ride in my stash’s color spectrum. If Midnight Ride’s base was purple instead of black, I bet they’d be twins.
The Chanel Spring collection, Bohemian Fantasy, is on sale now at Chanel counters and online at Chanel.com. Vendetta and Django retail for $23.
So what do you think kids? Who’s in? Who’s out? Who already caved?
Chanel Paris-Moscou Collection
From Russia with love I fly to you
Much wiser since my goodbye to you
I’ve travelled the world to learn
I must return from Russia with love
“From Russia With Love” lyrics by Lionel Bart
I don’t know about you gals but when I laid my glitter loving eyes on the Chanel Paris-Moscou collection, my heart skipped a beat. Talk about polishes sent “from Russia with love.” Feel free to groan at my cheesiness all you want but a collection of black based glitter bombs from Chanel is pretty unique.
Though in traditional Chanel style, Global Creative Director Peter Philips made the look upscale with super fine micro-glitter that lays down to leave a smooth glossy finish. By encapsulating the glitter in a black base, the shade isn’t as in your face as say a Ruby Pumps. Now I’m not knocking my fave red by saying that but when you consider the stereotypical “Chanel Woman”, Ruby Pumps probably isn’t her thing.

Chanel Spring 2009 Preview
Some of you may have already found Chanel’s Spring collection at your local counter but for those of you that haven’t been as fortunate, here’s a preview of what’s to come.
For Spring 2009, Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup Director, Peter Phillips, has created a “boho-chic” look. The collection includes two new nail lacquers including Django (beige pink), which was seen on the runways of Paris last September.
While delving through the house archives, Peter Philips, Global Creative Makeup Director for CHANEL, rediscovered gypsy dresses by Gabrielle Chanel. “The Gypsy is a heroine with very distinctive beauty codes,†explains Peter Philips. “After looking through the sketches by Mademoiselle Chanel, I also wanted to play with all of these contrasts. The gypsy’s eyes are as dark as her lips are fiery. She has the passion of travel in her veins, that of celebration, dance, and especially that of darkness and mystery.â€
I was wondering when we’d finally see a purple nail from Chanel and Vendetta (dark violet) is the answer to that question.
Now I don’t know about you but I’m a sucker for packaging so when I saw the LÈVRES SIGNÉES CHANEL Satin Lip Colour, I just about died. Who wouldn’t want to pull that from their purse and just stare?
It’s CHANEL lip colour as you’ve never seen it. Five lush satin lip creme shades, from pale pink to deep plum, form the legendary double C signature in a black lacquered case. Complete with a rich velvet pouch and brush applicator, the compact is the epitome of glamour.
The Chanel Spring 2009 is scheduled to hit counters in January ’09 but it’s already been popping up on counters around the country. Chanel LE VERNIS Nail Colour retails for $23 and the LÈVRES SIGNÉES CHANEL Satin Lip Colour retails for $60.
Chanel Moscow Nail Colour Collection
Spring boarding off the huge success of last summer’s Robertson Nail Collection, Chanel is introducing yet another set of limited edition polishes. The brainchild of Global Creative Director, Peter Philips, the Moscow Nail Collection consists of three glowing and intense looking glittery, black-based polishes inspired the beauty of Russian women. Making an appearance at the Chanel Paris-Moscow show on December 3rd, the colors are now available for purchase.
Now I don’t know Peter Philips but I have a bit of a crush on him. During my trip to NYC in October I had the pleasure of having tea with Chanel’s PR team. During our meeting, the ladies shared what a polish fanatic Peter is. That just made my little heart flutter. To see a prestige brand that recognizes the power of polish. That realizes that it isn’t just an ancillary product but an important part of the overall aesthetic. To that I say BRAVO! It’s now my goal to meet Mr. Philips some day.
“The Or de Russie nail colour we used on the models at the show comes from the new CHANEL Moscow Collection, composed of three shades that I specially created for the show,†states Peter Philips. “The base of these three shades is black, to which we added a different sparkle for each of the colours: red, gold and blue. The Feu de Russie shade is intense and reflects passion. Or de Russie has a slight gold patina and evokes richness, while Nuit de Russie blue is full of mystery. When you apply the shades, which are rather dark, the surprising element is that they capture light so well that they create a fireworks effect – the shades dazzle with an unbelievable sparkle.â€
The 2008 collection looked to Moscow, capital of a country and a culture which fascinated Gabrielle Chanel. With the Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich, Mademoiselle discovered the splendor of the tsars. In 1927, with Ernest Beaux, the perfumer of the tsars, she created her own fragrance, Cuir de Russie. She borrowed the pea jacket and pelisse from her lover Dmitri and gave them a feminine touch. The lavish embroidery and the byzantine accents of the Russian empire jewels are recurrent leitmotivs in the world of Chanel. But her most brilliant connections with Russia are still those with the Russian artists like Stravinsky, Diaghilev and Lifar.
The Chanel Moscow nail colour collection is available exclusively at CHANEL boutiques, CHANEL Makeup Studios and on Chanel.com. Suggested retail price: $30.00
