Essie Fall 2013 “For The Twill of It” Nail Polish Swatches & Review

If there’s one takeaway from my encounters over the years with Essie founder, Essie Weingarten, it’s that she loves fashion and color. Of all her seasonal collections, it’s the Essie Fall color palettes that express that best. Inspired by the textures and fabrics of the season, the Essie Fall 2013 “For The Twill of It” nail colors are rich, chic and utterly Essie.

“I love the idea of creating polish that’s like the proverbial boyfriend sweater – in this case, a blazer borrowed from the boys,” says brand founder and Global Creative Director Essie Weingarten. “Creating nail color with a warm and fuzzy feeling can be tricky,” Weingarten explains. “But when you get it right, it really is like putting on your favorite sweater.” Transferring the soft volumes and rich woolens of the fall runways, essie offers six seductively tactile shades that radiate beautifully tailored warmth.

Sunday Funday – Celebrating with the best ice cream cake EVER

By on August 25, 2013
in Sunday Funday with 8 Comments

It’s been a rough morning at ALU Headquarters. Last night we celebrated the boyfriend’s birthday in a most intoxicating way. A small party at home to welcome him to a new decade.

One of the first things I learned about him, over fourteen years ago, is that the man loves ice cream. More specifically, ice cream cake. He used to buy ice cream cakes from Dairy Queen for no special occasion. Just to have them.

So when his big 4-0 rolled around, I knew he needed a special cake. And thankfully we have an amazing artisinal ice cream shop nearby that specializes in just that. Sweetie Fry in Cleveland Heights is known for their unique, handmade ice cream flavors and entree french fries. My personal faves, Maple Bacon and Goat Cheese with nuts and honey.

In addition to traditional potato fries, they make funnel cake fries that become the base of the Sweetie Fry Ice Cream Cake. Topped with a layer of French Toast ice cream (one of the bf’s faves), it’s one ridiculously decadent treat.

We served this to a group of about 20 last night and every.single.one of them RAVED about it. It’s truly phenom and takes ice cream cake to a whole new level. If you live in the Cleveland area or come for a visit, I highly recommend an ice cream pit stop at Sweetie Fry.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Do you like the more unique flavors or the old standards? If  you’re from the area, have you been to Sweetie Fry?

They say parents shouldn’t pick favorites among their children. And when it comes to my FingerPaints “A Pair Affair” nail polish collection for Sally Beauty, the colors are like my children. Hell, they took much longer than nine months to birth. Regardless, I can’t help but be biased towards Our Tips Are Tealed. It’s my FAVORITE!!

Shh, don’t tell the other kids I said that. Oh right, they can’t hear me! Anyway, Our Tips Are Tealed is the total star of this nail polish show and, as proud as I am of all the shades in the collection, it has the strongest hold on my heart.

Its more grounded counterpart, Bare No Secrets, is chic and understated but with personality. See how they play off each other in a twist on the traditional French Manicure.

Makeup Wars – My Favorite Hair Tools

Outside of nail polish, my hair is probably my biggest beauty obsession. You see, I have one giant, hard-to-tame mane that is both a blessing and curse. When I get it under control, it’s my favorite feature. When left to its own devices (which no one but the boyfriend gets to see), it’s a hot garbage juice kind of mess. And that’s not me being self-deprecating. The boyfriend jokingly calls me “wookiee,” when I let my hair air dry. It’s serious, people.

Thanks to my lifelong search for the perfect potions and gadgets to take my locks to the next level, I have a bevy of tools in my hair arsenal. If it’s been on an infomercial, I’ve either tried it or have it on my to-do list, with the exception of the flowbee. I can’t with that.

Today I’m going to share some of my faves as part of this week’s Makeup Wars challenge. I’ll also let you in on some of the fails in my hair care graveyard.
