Rescue Beauty Lounge
The Nail Files – Ji Baek of Rescue Beauty Lounge
Ji Baek has been a beauty rebel since childhood when she would smuggle clothes and makeup out of the house and away from her conservative parents’ watchful eyes. She continues to buck the standard in the beauty industry as the founder of Rescue Beauty Lounge, the first nail focused luxury salon in New York City.
Originally, Ji was on the path to becoming a professional viola player. An injury cut that dream short, eventually leading her to the male dominated world of restaurant management. It was during those endless days in painful heels that the concept for Rescue Beauty Lounge came to fruition. With pedicures being the only reprieve for her aching feet, Ji was disgruntled with the nail options in NYC. Having to choose from dirty, cheap nail shops (I call them “chop shops”) or upscale salons where nails aren’t a priority, she set her sights on giving Manhattan women a hygienic, pampering destination that specializes in hands and feet. |
Ji is a punk at heart Her hair was once short and blonde She is a hands on owner. Ji hand mixes new colors right in the salon There is no RBL Warehouse She’s a perfectionist Her inherent love of fashion influences the RBL collections Polish names can have multiple meanings Black Russian is ReVamp Ji does what she wants, on her timeline She doesn’t pay attention to the competition Ji works hard and vacations even harder She’s childless by choice Now what kind of nail polish fanatic would I be if I didn’t bring home some RBL goodness to share with you. Here are my latest additions. Square Pants – the perfect banana pudding yellow. It’s intended to be more sheer but I used three coats. I want to give a heartfelt thanks to Ji Baek for inviting me into her lovely world of polish. As a teen she was restricted from any permanent beauty transformations due to her involvement in orchestra. As a former flautist, I know the pain of wearing those hideous black and white uniforms for concerts. It really is enough to make you want to dye your hair pink (something Ji would love to do someday). So she would don punk clothes and wear outrageous makeup as a way to express herself.
Can you imagine? That gorgeous mane cut off and bleached blonde? I guess we all go there once.
Ji works seven days a week. She didn’t grow her business to just sit back and drink in the success. You can usually find her at one of RBL’s two Manhattan locations.
That’s right kids. On any given day you might find Ji at the front desk, mixing polishes, working on her next creation.
You heard me. When all of you go crazy, ordering new collections, they pull stock from right in house and package on site. Spending all weekend getting your orders out if necessary.
Every polish that joins the RBL lineup must withstand Ji’s rigorous testing. She will send a shade back to production over and over until it meets her standards. Each lacquer must last nine days when used with her treatment system and be perfectly pigmented, requiring only two coats.
No More War, Teal, Yellow Fever, Recycle, Starfish Patrick, Bikini Bottom, Chinoise… they’re all straight from the runways. Ji takes inspiration from her favorite designers and translates it to nails.
Chinoise is a man magnet and the perfect intro to bold nail color
One of Ji’s long time clients works in a law firm, opting for safe, office appropriate colors. Hearing that she had a date, Ji convinced her to step outside her comfort zone and try Chinoise, a sexy red. Not only did it impress the man but her client has been experimenting with the rainbow of RBL shades ever since.
Ji revealed that some shade names aren’t as literal as they appear. While No More War is certainly a statement about our current political state, she says that Teal isn’t just a color descriptor. That it also references a state of calm.
We can put that question to bed, once and for all. For legal reasons it was renamed Black Russian.
You’ll never see a RBL collection rushed in order to meet magazine deadlines. Ji refuses to conform to traditional release dates or industry standards. If that means releasing just one polish or giving us a double whammy with two fall collections, so be it. She answers only to herself.
Not wanting to be influenced by other nails brands, Ji isolates herself from what they are doing.
With RBL being her main focus, Ji doesn’t have a ton of downtime. So when she takes a vacay, it’s for serious. We’re talking total relaxation. There’s no snorkeling trips or hiking excursions involved. In fact, she hardly ventures off property. A fave destination of her and the hubby, Cancun’s luxury resorts.
Much like the boyfriend and I, Ji and her husband have made the decision to be child-free. And we both wish people would stop telling us we’ll change our mind. It’s not always different when it’s yours.
Dead Calm – my new favorite blue. My 2008 wish of discovering the perfect blue creme came true when I met Dead Calm.
Chinoise – how could I not select “man magnet” red? Ji’s right, the boyfriend loved it. He digs red polish so I knew he’d be a sucker for this one.
In addition to the polishes, I snagged Rescue’s treatment system, it makes the polish wear like iron, and Citrus Vert hand lotion. If you love citrus scents, you’ll DIE over this. Though I forgot to pick up a copy of Ji’s book so I plan to get one while I’m in NYC next week.
Rescue Beauty Lounge for Fall/Winter 2008
Since previewing the Rescue Beauty Lounge Fall/Winter collection to you a little over a month ago it has already sold out once on the RBL site. Talk about a hit! Ji Baek’s vision of “luxe grunge” has come to life with these four creme polishes.
I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to test these beauties out and they all wowed me in different ways. I’ve been having this total nostalgia for the early 90s and my days of living in flannel, Birks and grunge gear after reconnecting with some of my college pals on Facebook (that site is totally addicting), and these colors fit right into that. They have this gritty, dusty, funky vibe that I’m so feeling. The creme finish makes them chic, not at all garish.
Plie is a re-promoted muted beige pink. It’s a great daytime neutral that is so out of my wheelhouse yet I’m oddly drawn to it. It was actually the first color I put on from this set and that’s so not me. I think because it doesn’t feel all super girly and frou-frou. Just elegant and classic. And for being such a light color, I was impressed with its opacity.
Bruised is a red based browned plum though I don’t really get the name. I bruise so easily and heal terribly that I could only wish my bruises had such a pretty color. I mean, when you have marks that last six months (and I’m not exaggerating) you’d much rather them be somewhat attractive. Anywho, Bruised applied like a dream and hardly needed two coats.
Teal is the hands down winner here though I’m sure you all knew I’d say that. It’s a blend of my two favorite colors, blue & green. How could this not be a knockout? It’s the color of the lake just before a storm. All murky and creepy yet stunningly gorgeous. I wore this last weekend and loved every second of it. Need I say more?
No More War – OK I know what you’re all thinking. Split pea soup. I’m not denying that. It’s totally fugly and crazy looking but you gotta give the girl props for going way outside the box on this one. I mean, who has this color in their nail arsenal? And that’s exactly the point. This is the polish version of Tyra’s “ugly pretty” on ANTM.
The Rescue Beauty Lounge Fall/Winter collection retails for $18/ea and is available now on RescueBeauty.com. Though as an added bonus, from now through 10/31/08, get FREE SHIPPING when you order the Treatment System. Considering how much we all bitch about shipping costs, that’s a sweet deal. I’ve heard good things about the Treatment System so now would be the time to jump on it.
Rescue Beauty Lounge Fall/Winter 2008 Preview
One of the things I loved about being at New York Fashion Week last spring, was learning how designers infuse nail and makeup colors into their overall look. And with each season, it seems that more and more fashion houses are recognizing the importance of incorporating nail polish into their inspiration.
What I love even more, is seeing how Ji Baek of Rescue Beauty Lounge will take her incredible sense of style and passion for fashion to create new and unique nail lacquer collections. We all watch for the trends and see certain colors, textures and themes emerge but when it comes to Rescue Beauty, it’s all about Ji and what she wants.
After popping out a Pre-Fall Collection of creme pastels inspired by Spongebob Squarepants this collection takes a completely different turn. A look that Ji is calling “Luxe Grunge.” To quote Ji, “This fall I’m experiencing a “Fashion ADD” moment, ruffles, beads, sequins, lace, gold, embroidery, ribbons and bows oh my!
“More than ever, this season is all about personal expression” Lanvin paraded miles of gorgeous ribbon creations, Balmain’s crystal-embroidered punk, Givenchy’s gothic romance, Burberry Prorsum’s perfect proportion of “trumpet” flare pants with chic beanies and Proenza Schouler’s sequined wide-legged trousers casually paired with a melton coat. They all have one thing in common, a slouchy silhouette touched with luxurious details. It’s not about crazy downtown layers but sumptuous fabric draped and worn with new ease.”
Among all this opulence there was one trend that stood out, opaque colored tights. “Perfect to match with short rounded nails in any of these new colors-I have already scored/pre-ordered all of Fogal tights-matching color tights and hands “how chic and utterly sexy!!!!”
Teal is a perfect deep green/navy that adds the right touch of mystery when worn with all black. Or wear it with bold winter florals or plaids to tone down the pattern. Ok fashion confession-Iʼm still haunted. Remember that perfect greenish blue Lanvin bag three seasons ago? I didnʼt get it and Iʼm getting this out of my system.
No More War this olive green is the perfect counterpoint to the defused earth tones on many of the runways.
Bruised is a deep plum brown. It actually goes with everything this fall from cooler shades of charcoal gray to saturated rich hues.
Plie, a classic opaque neutral beige with a hint of blush welcomes back the return of winter whites.
Now you know my obsession with all things green means this collection is making me a VERY happy camper. Hello No More War and Teal, you will be mine. Oh yes, you will be mine! And with as much as I love plums like NYC Cognac Sparkle, I’m sure Bruised will be a winner.
I know the $18 price tag is intimidating compared to your average salon brand but I can honestly say that the application and wear are outstanding. If you plunk down your pennies for a bottle, you won’t be disappointed. So if one or two of these colors really intrigue you, I say splurge a little. I don’t regret one single cent that I spent on Recycle. Instead, it makes me want to place an order for my biggest RBL lemmings Stormy, Concrete Jungle, Dead Calm, Square Pants and Yellow Fever.
The Fall/Winter collection will be available on RescueBeauty.com in October. I’m sure they’ll go fast so keep your eyes peeled. If you want to stay up to date on collection releases and VIP pre-orders, sign up for the RBL newsletter.
Rescue Beauty Lounge Recycle
Well I can tick one item off of my 2008 Wish List. Thanks to the brilliant Ji Baek, founder of Rescue Beauty Lounge, my dream of finding a quality green creme has come true.
Recycle, part of RBL’s Spring collection, is a glossy forest green creme. The highly pigmented lacquer applies smooth and even; a steady hand could get away with just one coat. I needed two.
The wear on this one really impressed me. I had swatched it on a bare nail to show my mom and thanks to my own laziness I left it on for a couple days. To be honest, when I realized there was no tip wear or chipping after two days I decided to leave it on, just as a test. By day four I had to lose the crazy one green nail look. That’s when I gave it the true test. A five day run with base and top coat and let me tell you, this one really holds up.
Overall, Recycle gets two enthusiastic thumbs up. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive because I really wanted to get Yellow Fever as well. I kind of hate the my eternal love of green forced me to shell out $18.00+ shipping. I know compared to a lot of beauty products on the market that’s nothing but in nail world it is.
Rescue Beauty Lounge for Spring
You read my swooning over Rescue Beauty Lounge Under The Stars, well now I’m practically drooling over their Spring collection. Why? Hello? Green! Do I need to say anything more?
RBL’s Spring collection pulls its inpiration straight from the bold jewel tones and brights seen on Lanvin’s runway. Alber Elbaz chose cobalt, green, yellow, red and violet to showcase his designs and Ji Baek has translated that to nail fashion.
RECYCLE is a deep blackish emerald green. This color makes your nails looks like precious jewelry.
PURPLE HAZE, a vivid violet, provides the perfect sour counterpoint to all those sweet garden prints.
YELLOW FEVER, a mouth-puckering lemon, will brighten up summer whites, and neutral shades of navy, khaki and olive.
And finally, a Lanvin dress inspired the re-launch of CHINOISE, my all-time favorite warm China red lacquer.
The Spring collection is available for purchase now through this special VIP link so if you want these colors, I suggest you order now before they show up in the magazines and cause a frenzy. RBL polishes retail for $18, which I know is steep. Personally I’d love to get them all but I just can’t justify that type of splurging so picking up Recycle will probably be my limit. My green loving knows no bounds.
