When it comes to special occasion makeup, I tend to rely on a smokey eye as evidenced by my Jump Back Ball looks (here and here). So when the latest Makeup Wars challenge called for a Holiday Eye look, I decided to buck tradition by opting for soft and shimmery, featuring the new Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, offset by a bold lip. Check it out!

Sunday Funday with Jenna Marbles – What Your Nails Mean!

Just a little nail humor on this Sunday Funday. A guy friend tweeted this at me the other day which made me realize I’m WAY behind on my YouTube subscriptions. I’m pretty loyal to In Bed With Joan and Jenna Marbles but I had not seen this one yet.

I cracked up multiple times as Jenna broke down what different nail styles and colors mean. To the point that the sleeping kitty in my lap freaked out and scratched me. Thanks for the pain, Jenna! It was totally worth it.

Word of warning: This is NOT SAFE FOR WORK or wee ones as there is adult and sexual language/references used in the video

Is Nail Polish Just A Fad? Weigh In!

Is nail polish a fad?
There was an interesting article on AdAge.com this week, citing that the nail polish market is plummeting, that lipstick is once again claiming the top spot in beauty and suggesting that nail polish is just a fad. So is it?

Granted, they mention that the biggest sales drop is in special effect polishes (Crackle, Matte, etc) rather than traditional nail polish but the massive overall growth seen in 2011 and 2012 is over Since we are doing better economically, the fact that nail polish sales are declining would suggest that the “nail index” concept is true. And Google searches would agree as “lipstick” has superseded “nail polish” for the first time in years.

Of course, I’m not about to stop wearing nail polish anytime soon. And even though I’ve come around to the idea of nail art and enjoy my feeble attempts at it, I wouldn’t cry if it went away. I mean, if the spring runways filled with pale, muted nails are any kind of indicator, nail art’s glory days could be behind it.

Obviously, I’m a bit biased, as are most of you, being nail polish fanatics and all, but I’d love to hear your take on the article. Is this just the natural progression of business? A plateau and not a plummet? Will big brands stop creating new and innovative nail products to focus on a more profitable sector of the industry? What say you?

Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection Preview

Carrie Underwood nail polish collection for Nicole by OPI

Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection

Even though I’m not into country music, I am a Carrie Underwood fan. I’ve followed her since her Idol days, I listen to her crossover hits and give her two thumbs up for marrying a NHL player (I live with a hockey goalie).

So, even though I’m not necessarily the target demo for Nicole by OPI, they skew towards a younger crowd, I’m curious to check out the Carrie Underwood Collection. Fourteen brand new shades, inspired by the country crooner, are headed our way this January, including a signature gold called Carrie’d Away.

Bobbi Brown is giving us old school glam with her Holiday 2013 “Old Hollywood” collection. As I’ve said before, this season’s nail polish trends are going the more traditional route with metallics and reds dominating the scene.

Clearly Bobbi got the memo and then some as she’s giving us holographic glitter realness with her new shade, Chrome. Who ever thought you’d see the words Bobbi Brown and holographic glitter in the same sentence? I mean, what??
